The PlayStation 4 (PS4) is Sony's eighth-generation console, which competed with Nintendo's Wii U and Microsoft's Xbox One. It sold over 117 million units, far more than either rival.

The PS4 got a head start on the Xbox One thanks to a well-run marketing campaign and Microsoft's disastrous reveal of the Xbox One.

Sony used the confusion around Microsoft's policies to its advantage, building strong interest in the PS4 and winning over many players. Microsoft's attempts to respond only helped Sony's campaign.

PS4 emulation is still at an early stage, but it is making progress. The open source emulator shadPS4, for Windows, Linux and macOS, can run a number of commercial games, including Bloodborne, although compatibility is limited and it needs a powerful PC.
