Silent Hill
Silent Hill is a survival horror game developed by Team Silent at Konami and released for the PlayStation in 1999. After a car crash, writer Harry Mason wakes to find his daughter Cheryl gone and the town of Silent Hill covered in fog, snow and, at times, a nightmarish ‘Otherworld’.
The game uses real-time 3D environments, with thick fog and darkness hiding the limits of the hardware and adding to the tension. A radio that crackles when monsters are near, a torch, Akira Yamaoka’s industrial soundtrack and several endings made it stand apart from its contemporaries.
It started one of the best-known horror series and is still regarded as a landmark of the genre.
