Resident Evil
Resident Evil is a survival horror game developed and published by Capcom for the PlayStation in 1996. Searching for a missing team in the Arklay Mountains, the S.T.A.R.S. Alpha team takes shelter in a mansion overrun by zombies and other creatures, and the player picks Chris Redfield or Jill Valentine to find a way out.
It set the template for the series: fixed camera angles over pre-rendered backgrounds, tank controls, limited ammunition and save ribbons, and puzzles that open up the mansion. Capcom brought it to Windows in 1997 and released a Director’s Cut on the PlayStation the same year.
A decompilation of the 1997 Windows release rebuilds that version natively for modern Windows and Linux.
