What you need: A disc image of Ape Escape (USA, SCUS-94423), dumped from your own copy, as .cue/.bin.

Ape Escape Recompiled is a native port of Ape Escape for Windows and Linux, made by static recompilation with PSXRecomp by mstan, the framework’s author. The game’s code is translated ahead of time into C and runs on a simulation of the PlayStation hardware, with the open-source OpenBIOS included.

It boots through the intro and title into gameplay with DualShock analog controls, including L3 and R3 clicks, and memory card saving works. It offers OpenGL and software renderers, save states and rewind, optional 16:9, 21:9 and adaptive widescreen, frame blending for high refresh rates, and built-in mods.

The author calls it a playable preview that has not yet been verified to the end. The author says AI tools were used heavily in making it. The download contains no game data. It needs Ape Escape (USA, SCUS-94423), dumped from your own disc.

How to set it up

  1. Download the Windows zip or the Linux AppImage.
  2. Extract the zip and run ApeEscapeRecomp.exe; on Linux, make the AppImage executable and run it.
  3. Select your Ape Escape disc image in the launcher. OpenBIOS is included, so a BIOS dump is optional.
  4. Plug in an analog controller: the game uses both sticks, as it did on the DualShock.
