SNK was founded in Osaka in 1978 and became famous for arcade games, above all fighting games. It went bankrupt in 2001 and was revived as SNK Playmore, now SNK Corporation.

The Neo Geo, from 1990, was sold both as the MVS arcade board and as the AES home console, which used the same cartridges. That made the AES the most powerful and most expensive home console of its time. Metal Slug, The King of Fighters, Samurai Shodown and Fatal Fury all came out on it, and SNK released new games until 2004. MAME and FinalBurn Neo run the whole library.

The Neo Geo CD, from 1994, was a cheaper way to play Neo Geo games at home, on CDs instead of costly cartridges. Its slow CD drive meant long loading times.

The Neo Geo Pocket, from 1998, was a monochrome handheld, quickly replaced in 1999 by the Neo Geo Pocket Color. Its clicky micro-switch stick suited fighting games such as SNK vs. Capcom: The Match of the Millennium. It sold poorly outside Japan and was dropped in 2001.
