Development of DEmul began after it became clear that Chankast would not be continued. Inspired by the fact that an emulator could run commercial Dreamcast games, the DEmul team set out to run the vast majority of the Dreamcast library, while adding features that improve the experience.

DEmul also emulates arcade systems based on similar hardware, including Sega's NAOMI and Sammy's Atomiswave.

Recent versions of DEmul use a DirectX 11 renderer, which improves speed but means it no longer works on older hardware.

DEmul is one of the most feature-packed Dreamcast emulators, and one of the strongest options on Windows.

Its main rival for performance and compatibility is Flycast, the successor to Reicast, which is open source and runs on many more platforms.
