PicoDrive
PicoDrive is a SEGA emulator that covers almost every home system SEGA made up to the 32X: the Genesis (Mega Drive), SEGA CD (Mega CD), 32X, Pico, Master System, Game Gear, SG-1000 and SC-3000. It was started by fDave as an emulator for the SEGA Pico, which gave it its name, and was then developed for many years by notaz. Most development now happens in irixxxx’s fork.
PicoDrive was written for ARM-based devices, first Pocket PCs and Symbian phones and then the GP2X and Pandora handhelds, so it is very fast. It has dynamic recompilers for the 32X’s SH-2 processors on ARM, ARM64, MIPS, RISC-V and PowerPC, and it was the first emulator to handle Virtua Racing and its SVP chip properly. It is one of the most compatible 32X emulators and has the most complete Pico support, including Storyware pages shown beside the game and the mouse as the Magic Pen. It also supports MSU-MD and other CD-enhanced cartridges, light guns and the SC-3000 keyboard and cassette drive.
PicoDrive is actively developed, and version 2.05 was released in May 2025. The official release builds are mainly for handhelds and consoles such as the GP2X, Pandora, PSP, PlayStation 2 and OpenDingux devices, and the generic SDL version also runs on Linux, macOS and Windows. On desktop computers and Android most people use its libretro core in RetroArch. The source code is available under a non-commercial licence.
