Magnavox Odyssey²

The Odyssey² is a second-generation home video game console released by Magnavox, then owned by Philips, in 1978. In Europe it was sold as the Philips Videopac G7000, and it was also sold in Brazil.

Its most unusual feature is a full membrane keyboard built into the console. It was used to enter names and scores and for educational and programming cartridges, and later for the Master Strategy series, which combined a cartridge with a board game.

The console’s graphics chip has a set of built-in characters and simple sprites, which gives many of its games a similar look. Well-known titles include K.C. Munchkin!, Quest for the Rings! and Pick Axe Pete!.

The Odyssey² sold about two million units, behind the Atari 2600 and Intellivision in the United States but with more success in Europe. Philips followed it in 1983 with the Videopac+ G7400, which added improved graphics and could play most older cartridges.

Today MAME has the most accurate Odyssey² and Videopac emulation. O2EM, the long-standing dedicated emulator, is simple to use but has not been updated since 2007.
