The Nintendo Wii is Nintendo's seventh-generation home console and a competitor to Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3. Its controllers work both as pointing devices and as motion sensors that detect movement in three dimensions, which opened the console up to kinds of games its competitors didn't offer.

Two of the original Wii's features are no longer available: one was removed from later models, and the other has been taken offline.

The first is backwards compatibility with GameCube games. The original Wii could play the entire GameCube library, as long as you had a GameCube controller, but this was removed from the last two models, the Wii Family Edition and the Wii Mini.

The second is its online service. Nintendo shut down WiiConnect24, which let the console receive updates and messages in standby, in 2013, and online play through Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection in 2014, so online multiplayer in Wii games no longer works. The Wii Shop Channel closed in 2019.
