- Developer: Jon Marshall
- Port type: Recompilation (A tool translated the game's original machine code into C automatically, which was then built as a native PC program.)
- Game: [Xenoblade Chronicles 2](https://emulationking.com/nintendo/switch/games/xenobladechronicles2/index.md)
- AI use: Mostly AI-built. The project says: “Most of the code and documentation is written by AI coding agents (Claude Code) under the maintainer's direction; the maintainer plays every build and decides what is merged.”
- Source code: /opt/buildhome/repo/content/nintendo/switch/games/xenobladechronicles2/ports/xc2recomp/index.md
- Runs on: Windows, Linux

What you need: Your own Xenoblade Chronicles 2 dumped from your own Switch: the base game and the 3.0.1 update (add-on content optional). Windows 10 or later, an x86-64 processor with AVX2, a Vulkan 1.3 graphics card with `VK_EXT_external_memory_host`, and about 36 GB free during setup (20 GB after).

XC2 Recomp turns Xenoblade Chronicles 2 into a native x86-64 Windows program by static recompilation. It is a fork of XCX Recomp from the same developer, itself based on TotK Recomp. The setup builds the game from the player's own dumped files and keys on their own computer, so the result contains the game and is meant only for that player. It is in early development: New Game, cutscenes and gameplay run with sound, text and menus.

It needs the 3.0.1 update and also supports the Expansion Pass add-on content. The game runs at 60 fps by default, with 30 to 360 fps selectable in the settings (anything above 60 is experimental), at any resolution and aspect ratio, ultrawide included. It plays with keyboard, mouse or gamepad, with the settings in an in-game menu (F1) and a performance overlay on F10.

A Linux AppImage of the setup is also released, though the project still lists Linux and Steam Deck support, emulator mods and VRR as planned.

## How to set it up

1. Download the setup zip for Windows and extract it, or download the AppImage for Linux and make it executable.
2. Start `XC2-Setup.exe` (or the AppImage). If SmartScreen warns about an unsigned app, choose More info, then Run anyway.
3. Pick your game files and `prod.keys`, the language and an install folder, and press Start. The setup builds the game once on your PC.
4. Play `xc2.exe` from the install folder. To update, run a newer setup on the same folder; saves and settings are kept.
