What you need: A ROM of Mega Man X2 (USA), dumped from your own cartridge.

MegaManX2SNESRecomp is a native port of Mega Man X2 for Windows and Linux, made by static recompilation with mstan’s snesrecomp. The game runs through the interpreter first, with statically compiled code added on top as coverage grows, and the Capcom Cx4 chip on the cartridge is emulated at the instruction level.

A widescreen mod with HUD anchoring is built in and off by default, and the launcher is shared with the other snesrecomp ports. The author says AI tools were used heavily in making it.

It is at an early stage: the README reports the game booting into its intro scenes, and wider gameplay testing is still open. The Linux download is an older build than the Windows one. The download contains no game data. It needs Mega Man X2 (USA), dumped from your own cartridge.

How to set it up

  1. Download the Windows zip or the Linux AppImage.
  2. Windows: extract the whole zip and run MegaManX2SNESRecomp.exe. Linux: make the AppImage executable and run it from a writable folder.
  3. Pick your ROM when asked, or put it next to the AppImage.
  4. Widescreen is an optional mod on the launcher’s Mods page.
