ActRaiser Recomp is a native port of ActRaiser for Windows, macOS and Linux, including the Steam Deck. The game’s 65816 code is converted to C and linked with a hand-written SDL3 runtime. The download is a Builder that holds the compiler and everything else it needs, and does this conversion on your own computer, offline.
Running as native code allows widescreen, layered 3D action stages, height-mapped towns and a 3D globe, GPU and CRT effects, replacement art and music, language packs with Japanese and European rule presets, and rebindable controls. The author says several AI coding assistants contributed to the tooling, runtime and documentation, under his direction and review.
All action routes have been completed end to end, while the simulation mode and some regions are still being tested. Releases are marked as pre-releases. The first run builds the game from your ROM and can take several minutes. The download contains no game data. It needs ActRaiser (USA), dumped from your own cartridge.
How to set it up
- Download the Builder for your system: the portable zip for Windows (x64 or ARM64) or macOS, the tarball for Linux (
./run-build.sh), or the Steam Deck AppImage. - Extract it into a writable folder and open the Builder.
- Give it your ROM. The Builder checks it, then compiles the game on your computer with its bundled tools, which can take several minutes the first time.
- Play from the Builder’s Workshop, where the settings menu explains each option.
