ActRaiser

ActRaiser is a game developed by Quintet and published by Enix for the Super Famicom in 1990, and for the Super NES in North America in 1991. The player is the Master, a god who has lost his power to the demon Tanzra and must win back the land region by region.

Each region begins with a side-scrolling action stage fought by a statue brought to life. Then the Master guides the people who settle it from a sky palace, telling them where to build and sending rain or lightning, before returning for a final action stage. Yuzo Koshiro’s orchestral soundtrack was a showcase for the SNES sound chip.

A native PC port exists: ActRaiser Recomp, a static recompilation whose Builder compiles the game on your computer.
