What you need: A ROM of Super Mario Bros. (World), dumped from your own cartridge.

SuperMarioBrosNESRecomp is a native Windows and Linux port of Super Mario Bros., made by static recompilation with mstan’s nesrecomp, which translates the game’s 6502 code into C.

It adds simultaneous co-op for two to four players, a separate widescreen build with the camera anchored to the action, save states and turbo. Optional character mods replace Mario with Captain Falcon, Pikachu, Samus, Link or Sonic, built at run time from your own copies of those games. The author says AI tools were used heavily in making it.

The author calls it fully playable: all worlds are believed to be completable. The download contains no game data. It needs Super Mario Bros. (World), dumped from your own cartridge.

How to set it up

  1. Download the Windows zip or the Linux AppImage. Extract the zip, or make the AppImage executable.
  2. Run SuperMarioBrosRecomp.exe or the AppImage and pick your ROM when asked. The path is remembered.
  3. Enable co-op and the character mods from the launcher. F6 and F7 save and load states.
