N64 PC Ports
N64 PC ports run Nintendo 64 games as native Windows, Linux and macOS programs, with no emulator. They add things the original hardware couldn’t do, such as widescreen, high frame rates, higher resolutions and mods.
There are two ways they are made. Decompilation projects rewrite the game’s code by hand as C until it compiles back to the exact original game, which takes years but gives code that is easy to change. Ship of Harkinian and Ghostship are built this way. Recompilation projects use N64: Recompiled, a tool that translates the game’s machine code into C automatically, which is much faster but harder to modify. Zelda 64: Recompiled is the best-known example.
None of these downloads include the game itself. Each one asks for a ROM dumped from your own copy of the game.
Zelda 64: Recompiled is a native PC port of Majora's Mask made by statically recompiling the N64 game, with ultrawide, high frame rates and RT64 rendering.
