GLideN64
Developer: Sergey Lipskiy (gonetz)
Updated:

GLideN64 is an open source video plugin for Nintendo 64 emulators by Sergey Lipskiy (gonetz), the lead developer of Glide64. It began in 2014 as a rewrite of Orkin’s glN64 and has since become the standard high-level (HLE) graphics plugin for both Project64 and Mupen64Plus. Part of its development was crowdfunded.

It emulates the N64’s frame buffer effects, depth buffer, microcode for games that other HLE plugins cannot run (such as the Factor 5 and Rogue Squadron titles), N64-accurate texture filtering and dithering, and renders at higher resolutions. It loads high-resolution texture packs in the GlideHQ (Rice) format, which most of the texture packs on this site use.

Which download to pick

The Stable download is Public Release 4.0 from 2019, which bundles builds for Project64 and Mupen64Plus in one 7z archive. The WIP downloads are the development builds the project publishes on GitHub (currently from August 2021). They have fixes that 4.0 lacks, so they are usually the better choice:

  • Project64 (32-bit): for the usual 32-bit Project64 3.x. Use the 64-bit build only with a 64-bit Project64.
  • Project64 1.6 and Legacy: for Project64 1.6, 1.7 and Project64 Legacy, which use an older plugin interface.
  • Mupen64Plus: for Mupen64Plus and front ends built on it. Rosalie’s Mupen GUI and simple64 already ship with GLideN64.

Copy the plugin DLL and its GLideN64 folder into the emulator’s Plugin folder, then pick GLideN64 as the video plugin in the emulator’s settings. It needs a graphics card with OpenGL 3.3 or OpenGL ES 3.0 support.
