gen1recomp is a native port of the first-generation Pokémon games for Windows, Linux, macOS and Android, made by bryanthaboi as a reimplementation in Lua on the LÖVE engine. It reads the maps, graphics, text and music from your ROM when you import it and runs the game in its own engine.
The engine is hand-written Lua ported from the pret disassemblies. Red, Blue and Yellow are the most complete; Gold, Silver, Crystal, FireRed and LeafGreen can also be imported, with Gen 2 support still under construction. It has a mod manager, rulesets that keep the original quirks or clean them up, link play and a save editor, and new releases come often.
The download contains no game data. It needs a US ROM of Pokémon Red, Blue or Yellow (or another supported game), dumped from your own cartridge.
How to set it up
- Download the build for your system (zip, AppImage, Flatpak, macOS zip or Android APK) and install or extract it.
- Start the game and choose your ROM when it asks. Only the standard US ROMs are accepted.
- The import takes a few seconds; after that the game starts from the imported data.
- Windows Defender may flag the Windows build by mistake; the project notes this as a false positive.
