PC-88
PC-88 Specifications
The PC-8800 series, usually called the PC-88, is a line of 8-bit home computers made by NEC. The first model, the PC-8801, was released in Japan in 1981, and new models appeared until the end of the 1980s.
The PC-88 used a Z80 compatible processor and came with N88-BASIC, written by Microsoft. It had good graphics for its time, with a 640 x 200 screen in eight colours, and later models added FM sound from Yamaha chips.
The 1985 PC-8801mkII SR was the most important model. It added better graphics and the YM2203 FM sound chip, and it became the standard target for Japanese computer games in the second half of the 1980s. Along with the Sharp X1 and Fujitsu FM-7, the PC-88 was one of the main Japanese home computers of the era.
Many well-known Japanese series started on or were ported to the PC-88, including Ys, Hydlide, Dragon Slayer, Snatcher and early Enix and Square titles. Nearly all of its library stayed in Japan. The PC-88 was later replaced by the PC-98 and home consoles.
QUASI88 is a dedicated, open source PC-88 emulator with an official Windows build. MAME also emulates the PC-88.
