The Xbox One was Microsoft's entry into the eighth generation of consoles, and its launch is remembered as one of the most mishandled in console history, largely because of confused messaging.

Its reveal event spent much of its time on non-gaming features, and the rest on poorly explained policies such as a regular online check-in and restrictions on trading in and lending games, which would have made console games work more like the PC platform Steam.

Microsoft's attempts to clarify these policies over the following weeks only added to the confusion, and both were eventually dropped in favour of the traditional approach. Don Mattrick, the head of Xbox, left Microsoft shortly afterwards. Sony used the situation to promote the PlayStation 4, which gained a clear early lead that the Xbox One never recovered from.

Microsoft later stopped publishing Xbox One sales figures, so it is hard to say exactly how well the console sold.

Emulation of the Xbox One is still in its infancy. There is no working Xbox One emulator, and there have been few serious attempts at one. A few Xbox One games can still be played on PC through community ports, which run the game's own code natively; they are listed under Xbox One Games.

There is currently no Xbox One emulator that can run commercial games. If you find one online, it is almost certainly fake and may contain adware or malware, especially if it claims to run games fully.
