Overview
This is a native Windows port of Phantom Crash, Genki’s 2002 mech combat game for the original Xbox, rebuilt in modern C++ with SDL3 and Direct3D 11. The repository and download contain no game files, executable, text or Xbox firmware: the game is installed from the player’s own disc.
It plays at any resolution in a window or fullscreen, with widescreen 3D and a 4:3 or widescreen HUD, a frame-rate cap from 30 to 144 or unlimited, optional dynamic lighting and shadows, SMAA and an “original softness” look. The keyboard and mouse can aim as well as controllers, and every control can be rebound.
It adds LAN co-op, experimental split-screen co-op for up to four players, a live RUMBLING in which each area’s contest fights on while the player chooses, and the weapon stats the original hides. With the player’s own European S.L.A.I. disc, that game’s content can be added too.
How to Set It Up
- Download the Windows x64 zip and extract it.
- Run
Start Game.bat. On first start the game installs from your disc image, and doesn’t need it again. - For LAN play, allow the game through the firewall on private networks (UDP 29641 and 29642).

What's new in v0.5.22Phantom Crash v0.5.22
The players’ robots can’t be hurt while a boss’s entrance holds the camera.
- When a boss walks out in its own entrance shot, the camera and the players’ controls belong to the boss while the other robots fight on. Until the boss’s walk ends, no hit hurts, pushes or staggers the players’ robots; the other robots can still hit each other.
- This is a port addition. Setting
boss_spares_playerstofalseindata/world/training.jsonrestores the original behaviour. - Online, both players should use 0.5.22.
Getting started
- Unzip
PhantomCrash-0.5.22-windows-x64.zipanywhere (or over an earlier version; seedocs/WINDOWS_RELEASE.md). - Run
Start Game.bat. On first run the game asks for your Phantom Crash (Europe) disc image and installs the game data from it.
PhantomCrash-0.5.22-third-party-sources.zip holds the sources and build configuration of the bundled libraries. SHA256SUMS.txt lists the archives’ checksums.
Validation: the Release build was made from the tagged commit. In core, 667 of 671 tests pass; the 4 failures (a dash glyph test, two tutorial course runs and a blur test) also fail on 0.5.21. Two new tests cover the boss-entrance protection. The online, co-op, SLAI and smoke tests pass. The packaged EXE was started with --smoke-test under a time limit and exited cleanly.
