What you need: A disc image (`.iso`) of Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction (USA) for the Xbox, made from your own disc. An `.xiso` image or the PlayStation 2 version won't work.

Mercenaries Recompiled is a native Windows port of the Xbox version of Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction. The game's executable is translated to C with xboxrecomp and built into a Windows program, with compatibility layers standing in for the Xbox's graphics, audio, input, memory and kernel services. Wine and Proton can run the Windows build, but there is no native Linux or macOS version.

It supports keyboard and mouse or a controller with remappable controls, and adds options for resolution scaling, aspect ratio, field of view, a frame rate cap of up to uncapped, V-Sync, anisotropic filtering, borderless or windowed display and how far away NPCs wake up. Several bugs from the original game are fixed, with an OG Bugs option to bring them back, and the launcher can load mods with their own saves. An optional PS2 Upgrades setting swaps in a few weapon sounds and a tank texture from the PlayStation 2 version.

The author says it was built with the help of AI coding tools. It needs the USA Xbox release of the game, dumped from your own disc.

## How to set it up

1. Download the zip and extract all of it, keeping its DLLs and the `tools` and `compat` folders together.
2. Run `Mercenaries Recompiled.exe`.
3. On first launch, select your Xbox `.iso` and choose Install. The launcher extracts and checks the game files once; later launches start the game straight away.
4. Change the resolution, aspect ratio, frame rate cap and other settings from Recomp Options in the main or pause menu.
