What you need: An original Xbox disc image (.iso or .xiso) of Halo: Combat Evolved from your own disc, any region; the Halo PC disc or the Custom Edition installer works too. Windows 10 or later, macOS (Apple silicon or Intel), Linux including the Steam Deck, or Android 9 or later.

Overview

Online PlayCross-Platform PlaySplit Screen

Chupathingy is a port of the Halo: Combat Evolved decompilation to Windows, macOS, Linux, the Steam Deck, Android and FreeBSD, with builds for several consoles in testing. It began as a fork of OpenCE, an earlier port of the same decompilation also listed here, and has had its own code, releases and community since October 2026.

It plays the campaign, split screen, system link and online games with players on every platform. It plays like the Xbox game, and everything extra is a setting. The project says the decompilation it is built on, and the port it was forked from, were made with heavy use of generative AI.

It never includes or downloads Microsoft’s files: the maps are copied from the player’s own disc image.

How to Set It Up

  1. Download the build for your system and extract it (on Linux, make the AppImage executable). On Android, also copy the disc image to the phone.
  2. Start Chupathingy. On Windows, if it warns about an unknown publisher, choose More info, then Run anyway; on a Mac, move it to Applications and allow it once in Privacy & Security.
  3. Pick your Halo disc image and wait while it copies the maps (about 2 GB).
  4. The game checks for updates when it starts and asks before installing a signed one.

  • Linux x64: most VPSes
  • Linux arm64: Oracle free tier, Raspberry Pi 4/5, Ampere
  • Linux x86: 32-bit systems

Halo PC (Custom Edition) and HaloMD maps need the x64 or arm64 server; the x86 one is for the Xbox maps.

How to set one up: the server’s guide

Compatibility: plays with OpenCE build-244 (network version 32).

Debug builds, checksums, signatures

  • Debug builds, which stop at the first failed assertion and log it: v0.8.1d-debug
  • Commit: 844242abdfb9
  • SHA256SUMS lists every download’s SHA-256 (the debug builds’ too), and SHA256SUMS.sig signs it. Each zip and the AppImage has its own signature beside it (.sig).
  • updates.json and updates.json.sig: the signed list of update files the self-updaters read (0.8.0 and later).
  • The public keys: update_key.h
