Halo: Combat Evolved is a first-person shooter developed by Bungie and published by Microsoft for the Xbox in 2001, as a launch title for the console. The Master Chief, a cybernetically enhanced supersoldier, and the AI Cortana crash-land on Halo, an ancient ring world, while fleeing the alien Covenant.

It popularised regenerating shields, a two-weapon limit and dedicated grenade and melee buttons on console shooters, and its levels mix on-foot fighting with vehicles such as the Warthog. System link let up to 16 players play together over several consoles.

A port of a decompilation of the Xbox game runs it natively on Linux, Windows and Android.
