Overview
Def Jam Recompiled is an unofficial native port of the Xbox version of Def Jam: Fight for NY for Windows, macOS and Linux, the Steam Deck included. The game’s Xbox executable is translated into C with sp00nz’s xboxrecomp toolkit and compiled ahead of time, while a compatibility runtime stands in for the console and the computer supplies graphics (Direct3D 11 on Windows, Vulkan on macOS and Linux), sound and input. The download is a single app that holds no game files: it checks the player’s own US copy, recompiles and builds the game on their computer, and then handles playing, settings, controls, mods, updates, repairs and uninstalling. Every part of the game works.
It aims for 60 frames per second at one to four times the original resolution, with widescreen up to 32:9 or the original 4:3. Xbox, DualSense, Switch Pro and other gamepads work with remapping and rumble, and up to four players can fight on one computer; there is no online play. The app can generate four-times upscaled versions of the game’s own textures from the player’s copy, and its Mods page offers a reviewed catalogue of texture and language mods, among them widescreen HD menus and a Spanish translation, with the disc’s French available as a setting.
An overlay adds a cheat menu (infinite health, giant and tiny fighters, fighter swaps, Story cash) and reopens EA’s own developer menu, left out of the retail game, for setting up any match or Story scene. On Windows and Linux one button adds the game to Steam with its artwork. The app checks GitHub for new versions and rebuilds the game from the player’s copy when they update, keeping saves, settings and mods.
How to Set It Up
- Download the app for your system: the
.exefor Windows, the.zipfor macOS or the.AppImagefor Linux and the Steam Deck. - The app isn’t code-signed. On Windows choose More info, then Run anyway; on macOS unzip it, open it, then allow it under System Settings, Privacy & Security; on Linux allow the
.AppImageto run as a program. - Choose your disc image or extracted folder, pick the Modern (widescreen, 2x resolution) or Original (4:3) settings, optionally tick Upscaled Original Textures, then choose Set up game. The app checks your copy and builds the game, which takes several minutes.
- Press Play. F1 opens the in-game overlay for settings, controls, cheats and the developer menu.

What's new in v1.0.1Def Jam: Fight for NY — Recompiled v1.0.1
v1.0.1 — Linux ships as one AppImage
A packaging hotfix for v1.0.0. The game, the app and the setup behave as in v1.0.0; only the Linux downloads change.
As always, you need your own supported USA Xbox dump. No game files or game executables are distributed.
Linux and Steam Deck players: update by hand once. The Linux app is now
DefJamRecompiled-1.0.1-linux-x86_64.AppImage. The v1.0.0 AppImage looks for the old file name, and the v0.13.0 Linux setup looks for a setup download that no longer exists, so neither offers this update. Download the AppImage below and open it: it finds your installation and offers to update the game, keeping your saves, settings and mods. From then on it updates itself.
Downloads
- Windows:
DefJamRecompiled-1.0.1-windows-x64.exe. - Linux and Steam Deck:
DefJamRecompiled-1.0.1-linux-x86_64.AppImage. It installs, updates and adds itself to Steam, and builds the game with a toolchain it carries. - macOS (Apple Silicon):
DefJamRecompiled-1.0.1-macos-arm64.zip. - The Windows and macOS setup tools (
DefJamSetup-1.0.1-windows-x64.exe,DefJamSetup-1.0.1-macos-arm64.dmg) are attached as well. Every file has its SHA-256 and provenance.
What changed
- Linux ships only the AppImage (#199). The separate Linux setup download (
DefJamSetup--linux-x64.tar.gz) is no longer published. The AppImage carries the same setup and does everything it did. - The AppImage names its platform (#199):
DefJamRecompiled--linux-x86_64.AppImage, like the Windows and macOS files. The app and the website still recognise the old name for v1.0.0.
Moving to 1.0.1
- Windows and macOS, from 1.0.0: the app offers this release as an update. Then it offers Update game, which builds the game again from your dump. Your saves, settings and mods are kept.
- Linux and Steam Deck, from 1.0.0 or v0.13.0: download the AppImage above and open it, as described at the top.
Tested for this release
- Windows 11: unit tests (706 passed; the Linux-only ones are skipped on Windows) and the source policy check.
- CI: the Windows, macOS and Linux app and setup builds, the Linux setup’s wizard smoke test and the release asset checks.
- The game itself is unchanged from v1.0.0, so the full regression was not rerun. See the v1.0.0 notes for its test results and known issues.
