Overview
TRX, by the LostArtefacts team, is a single open-source engine that runs the first three Tomb Raider games, Core Design’s classics from 1996 to 1998. It grew out of their earlier TR1X and TR2X projects and combines decompiled code from the original games with open-source replacements for their proprietary parts, keeping each game’s own mechanics.
All three games can be played from beginning to end. TRX fixes many original bugs and adds widescreen and higher resolutions, a customisable draw distance, full controller support with rebindable controls, 3D pickups, skyboxes, a photo mode, detailed level statistics and the PlayStation version’s interface as an option, along with an optional sprint and other moves.
It also runs custom levels, and work on Tomb Raider: The Last Revelation is under way.
How to Set It Up
- Download the Windows installer, the Windows zip, the macOS disk image or the Linux zip.
- On Windows, the installer can copy the game files from your CD, GOG or Steam copy. For the zips, follow the project’s install guide to put your game’s data next to TRX.
- Start the game you want to play, and change graphics, controls and the many extras in the options.
