RollerCoaster Tycoon 2 was created by Chris Sawyer, who wrote it almost entirely in x86 assembly, and published by Infogrames for Windows in 2002. It followed the 1999 hit RollerCoaster Tycoon and was later extended by the Wacky Worlds and Time Twister expansions.

Players build an amusement park from scratch or take over an existing one, laying out roller coasters piece by piece alongside flat rides, shops, scenery and paths. Guests have their own thoughts, needs and budgets, and scenarios set goals such as a park rating, guest count or value by a deadline. The sequel added a scenario editor and a designer for custom rides and scenery.
