VCMI is an open-source rewrite of the engine of Heroes of Might and Magic III, New World Computing’s 1999 turn-based strategy game. It plays the Restoration of Erathia, Armageddon’s Blade and Shadow of Death campaigns and maps with the player’s own game data.

It runs at high resolutions on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, and adds an online lobby for multiplayer, a random map generator, a reworked AI and many interface improvements, while also offering an option to play by the original rules.

Its modding system goes far beyond the original game: new towns, creatures, artifacts and campaigns can be added, and popular mods such as Horn of the Abyss install from inside the launcher.

How to Set It Up

  1. Download the installer for Windows, the disk image for your Mac, the Linux AppImage or the Android APK.
  2. Start the VCMI Launcher. Its first-start wizard copies the Data, Maps and Mp3 folders from your Heroes III install, or unpacks the GOG offline installer for you.
  3. Choose your language and mods (such as Horn of the Abyss) in the launcher, then press Start game.
