Kroz is a series of text-mode action adventures by Scott Miller, the games that launched Apogee. You search each level for gems, keys and whips while the monsters close in. This download has the whole series, from Kingdom of Kroz in 1987 through The Lost Adventures of Kroz, each in its own folder.

Apogee released every Kroz game as freeware in 2009, and the source code under the GPL.

How to set it up

  1. Install DOSBox Staging or another DOS emulator.
  2. Unzip the download into a folder of its own.
  3. Start DOSBox Staging and type mount c "<folder>\krozfree", where <folder> is where you unzipped the download, then c:.
  4. Type dir to see the games. Each one is in its own folder, which DOSBox shows by its short name, such as 1989-C~1 for Castle of Kroz.
  5. Type cd and the folder’s name, then the game’s program, such as CASTLE.EXE.
