Elite is the open-ended space trading game. Commander Jameson starts with a Cobra Mk III, 100 credits and a pulse laser, and from there you trade, mine, hunt pirates or turn pirate yourself across eight galaxies of planets drawn in wireframe 3D.

David Braben and Ian Bell wrote it for the BBC Micro in 1984, and Firebird published this PC version in 1987. Its rank system runs from Harmless to Elite.

How to set it up

  1. Install DOSBox Staging or another DOS emulator.
  2. Unzip the download into a folder of its own.
  3. Start DOSBox Staging and type mount c "<folder>\elite", where <folder> is where you unzipped the download, then c:.
  4. Type ELITE.EXE to start the game.
