DOSBox

DOSBox is an open source emulator that recreates an IBM PC compatible running DOS, so that old games and programs can run on modern computers. It emulates the CPU, graphics cards from Hercules and CGA up to VGA, and sound devices such as the PC speaker, AdLib and Sound Blaster.

DOSBox was written by the DOSBox Team and released under the GNU GPL. It became the standard way to play DOS games, and many commercial re-releases of DOS games ship with it. Official builds are available for Windows and macOS, with source code and distribution packages for Linux.

DOSBox is no longer updated. Its last release, 0.74-3 from 2019, was a security update to 0.74. For new features and continued development, use one of its maintained forks: DOSBox Staging, which focuses on sensible defaults and modern features, or DOSBox-X, which focuses on accuracy and running Windows 3.x and 9x.
