The Commodore 64 is an 8-bit home computer released by Commodore International in August 1982. It was priced well below competing computers with similar features, and it went on to become the best-selling single computer model ever, with estimates between 12.5 and 17 million units sold.

The C64 had 64 KB of RAM and two custom chips that were advanced for a home computer of the time: the VIC-II, which handled graphics with hardware sprites and smooth scrolling, and the SID, a three-voice synthesiser chip that gave the machine its distinctive sound.

Commodore sold the C64 in ordinary retail shops as well as computer stores, which helped it reach a very wide audience. It was especially popular in Europe, where games were often released on cassette tape, while North American users mostly used the 1541 floppy disk drive.

The C64 has one of the largest game libraries of any system, and its active demoscene and homebrew community still release new software today. Commodore produced it until 1994.

VICE is the standard C64 emulator today: it is accurate, open source and runs on almost every platform. Denise is a newer, cycle-accurate alternative that also emulates the Amiga.
