VICE

VICE, the Versatile Commodore Emulator, is a program that emulates Commodore’s 8-bit computers. It covers the C64 and C64C, the C64DTV, the C128, the VIC-20, almost every PET model, the Plus/4 and C16, and the CBM-II. It started in 1993 and is developed by the VICE Team.

VICE is very accurate, with cycle-exact CPU and VIC-II emulation and several SID engines, including reSID. It also emulates the 1541 and other disk drives in full, the Datasette, a large range of cartridges and expansions such as the REU and SuperCPU, and it includes a built-in machine code monitor. It can run nearly all games and demos, including those that rely on precise timing.

The project is active, with version 3.10 released in December 2025. Official builds are available for Windows and macOS (Apple Silicon and Intel), in both GTK3 and SDL2 versions, and it can be built from source or installed from the package manager of most Linux distributions. VICE is released under the GNU GPL version 2.
