The Atari 5200 SuperSystem is a console that Atari released in 1982. It was based on Atari's existing 400/800 home computers, with software adapted for the console.

The 5200 sold poorly compared with its predecessor, the Atari 2600. Several factors contributed to this, including the fact that it could not play 2600 games at launch. Atari discontinued the console after only two years, with around 1 million units sold.

The 5200 did introduce some new ideas. Its controller had an analogue joystick, and it came with an automatic TV switchbox that switched between normal TV viewing and the console's signal. Early models also had four controller ports, when most consoles of the time had two.

## Atari 5200 Emulators

- [Altirra](https://emulationking.com/atari/5200/emulator/altirra/index.md): Altirra is a cycle-accurate Windows emulator for the Atari 5200 and Atari's 8-bit computers by Avery Lee, regarded as one of the most accurate available.
- [Atari++](https://emulationking.com/atari/5200/emulator/atariplusplus/index.md): Atari++ is an open source emulator for the Atari 5200 and Atari's 8-bit computers that aims to reproduce the original hardware down to its bugs.
- [Atari800](https://emulationking.com/atari/5200/emulator/atari800/index.md): Atari800 is an open source emulator for the Atari 5200 and Atari's 8-bit computers, running on Windows, macOS, Linux and many other systems.
- [Jum52](https://emulationking.com/atari/5200/emulator/jum52/index.md): Jum52 is a cross-platform Atari 5200 emulator with good sound, but unreliable collision detection makes Atari800 or Altirra a better first choice.
- [Kat5200](https://emulationking.com/atari/5200/emulator/kat5200/index.md): Kat5200 is an open source emulator for the Atari 5200 and Atari 8-bit computers. It needs the original Atari 5200 BIOS and is no longer developed.
- [Rainbow](https://emulationking.com/atari/5200/emulator/rainbow/index.md): Rainbow is a discontinued, closed source Atari 5200 and 8-bit computer emulator by Chris Lam. It runs most 5200 games and includes debugging tools.
