Overview
FinalBurn Neo (FBNeo) is an arcade emulator that continues the work of FinalBurn and FinalBurn Alpha. It was started in 2019 by developers who had worked on FinalBurn Alpha, and is based on the original FinalBurn and on older versions of MAME.
It focuses on 2D arcade games, such as Capcom’s CPS-1, CPS-2 and CPS-3, the Neo Geo MVS and AES, Cave, Toaplan, Konami and SEGA System 16 boards. It also runs the Neo Geo CD, and a set of consoles and computers including the Neo Geo Pocket and Pocket Color, PC Engine, TurboGrafx-16 and SuperGrafx, Master System, Game Gear, SG-1000, Mega Drive, NES, SNES, ColecoVision, MSX and ZX Spectrum. It supports netplay and runs well on modest hardware.
FinalBurn Neo is actively developed, and a new nightly build is published on GitHub after each change. The main standalone version is for Windows (x64, 32-bit and ARM64), with less maintained SDL builds for Linux and a separate macOS port. It is also widely used as a libretro core in RetroArch. Its source code is available, but its licence does not allow commercial use, so it is not open source in the strict sense.
